What is ISI registration?

ISI stands for Indian Standards institute a body set up in 1947, to create standards needed for orderly commercial growth and quality in the commercial product. After functioning for years the Indian government decided to bring a couple of changes in their standardization system. Hence, in the year 1986 came the new stronger body for the standardization of Indian industrial products known as Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) which than took over as ISI.

The term ISI continues to used for assurance that certain product conforms to the quality standard set up by the government. BIS allot ISI mark to any product as third party guarantee after ensuring its quality, efficiency, and reliability. BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) has changed its objective from testing to industrial products. Most importantly it currently aims at satisfying the consumers and also undertakes various quality certification activities.

The use of ISI mark is mandatory and voluntary for certain products. There are 16 broad categories of products including textiles, automobile components, packaged water, food, plastic products, and electronics BIS has laid down standards. BIS is authorized by the legislation of 1986 to offer products certification. Any manufactures who feels confident enough that his product has the ability to meet the BIS standards can apply for the certification in two ways-

  1. Submitting an application at the bearest BIS office. A BIS officer will then visit your manufacturing unit to inspect the quality of the product and evaluate quality standards. If the sample analysis is satisfactory and passes the result than the license is granted and the manufacturer can use the ISI mark.
  2. The manufacturer provides test reports to BIS after it gets the product tested in the bureau’s labs and gets the necessary documents certified independently.
