It has been established under the food safety and standard act, 2006 as a ruling body for laying down science based standard for articles of food regulating , manufacturing , processing , distributing sales and import of food to ensure that the food supplied to the customers is safe for human consumption. It also helps to frame the regulations to lay down guidelines and standard in relation to specify appropriate system of imposing various standards.
It also helps in providing technical support and scientific advice to central & state government for introducing the policies & rules in area which have direct or indirect bearing of food safety and nutrition. Collect all the data regarding food safety , food consumption , contaminants in food products , Identification of risks. It also Creates information that helps the public , consumers to be aware about the rapid , reliable & Objective information about food safety. Helps developing the international food standards.

Various food safety and standard acts are Prevention of food adulteration act, 1954, Meat food products order, 1973 , Vegetable oil products order, 1947 , Milk and Milk products order 1992 ,Edible oil packaging order 1988, cpmmencement of FSS act 2006.
Food safety and standard authority of India has its head office at Delhi. This act also aims to establish single point of reference for all food safety and standard matter by converting Multi department control to a single line command.
Ministry of health and family welfare , for the implementation of FSSAI, Government of India is the Administrative ministry. Government appointes the chairperson and food executive officer of food safety and standard authority of India.
