What is Import Export IEC Certificate?

IE or the import export code is the number or the key which one requires when one has to do import and export of any good and services which are being exported and imported. The code is issued by the DGFT (Directorate General of Foreign Trade). The IEC (Import Export Code) is valid for lifetime. IEC code is the very first step that is required to before doing any import and export business.

The application of the IEC or the Import Export Code number shall be made by the registered/ head office of applicant and apply to the nearest regional authority of DGFT (Directorate General of Foreign Trade, the registered office in the case of company and head office in case of the others, it will fall under the "Aayaat Niryaat Form - ANF2A" and then shall be accompanied or be given with the documents prescribed therein.

Furthermore, we shall see that in the case of the STPI/ EHTP/ BTP units, the regional offices of the DGFT (Directorate General of Foreign Trade), which have the jurisdiction over the district in which the Registered Office/ Head Office of the STPI unit is located and hence shall amend and issue the IEC's (Import Export Codes).

Also, one must note that, a single IEC (Import Export Code) is would be issued against a single PAN number. Moreover, a single proprietor can have a single IEC (Import Export Code) and if by any circumstances or any case there are more than two IECs (Import Export Codes) allotted to a proprietor, then the same must be surrendered to the regional office for the cancellation.

The IEC (Import Export Code) thus generated is valid for all the branches/ offices/divisions/factories as given in the format of IEC notified on the website of the DGFT (Directorate General of Foreign Trade). In case an IEC (Import Export Code) is lost or misplaced, then by requesting the issuing authority for grant of a duplicate copy of the IEC (Import Export Code) and the same request must be accompanied by an affidavit duly signed and notified at the authority or the nearest regional office.

IE Code stands for the Import Export Code, is a unique 10 digit number issued by Director General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), part of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, to any person or company for carrying on Import and Export business in India.

You don't need to be a registered entity to apply for IEC certificate in India. You can apply even as an individual. The IEC registration does not apply to technology and services. However, it does in certain cases in which international trade is restricted, such as nuclear weapons and automatic guns. The Import Export Code (IEC) is a 10-digit code with permanent validity issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT).
